In this month’s issue I am excited to feature an exclusive interview with BG Capital Group CEO, Bobby Genovese. Not only is he an accomplished and talented businessman and investor, the handsome, Canadian-born visionary behind BG Capital Group is a truly happy person with an intuitive way of viewing life, business and success. In this interview Bobby shares with us his life, success and his outlook on the future.

Tell us how you began in business and what your experiences have been over the past four decades.
I was born in Canada where, by age 25, I had already started my first company before establishing BG Capital Group, which is based in the Bahamas where I now live. Success over the past four decades has come from assisting numerous ventures across a broad spectrum of industries using a very specific entrepreneurial formula: I figured out very early on that the key to everything — whether in business or in life — is having a unique vision that you are passionate about, partnering with the right people, and always having fun doing it. With those three things nothing can stand in your way. It’s why our signature tagline is: 'Who has more fun than us?'

What lessons have you learned in life and how have those lessons prepared you in business?
I grew up in Cookstown, a small farming and equestrian community just north of Toronto, where my family lived in a 1930's farmhouse on over 100 acres of land. As a teenager, I was already an accomplished equestrian and spent most of my time working at horse stables or giving riding lessons at area clubs. Although my mother had instilled in me the value of hard work, I knew that I didn’t want to bale hay and give riding lessons forever. One of my mottos is: ‘Work Smarter, Not Harder’ and it was obvious to me that the people who ‘owned’ the horses and were paying for the lessons had figured out something I needed to learn. I began asking a lot of questions of the Who’s Who of Toronto and, through the process, I found my true calling in the financial markets.

Who are you in two words?
Entrepreneur. Optimist. I’ve spent my entire adult life as an entrepreneur — building, buying, launching and running businesses across a wide spectrum of industries. I find it immensely satisfying to continually meet the always-changing and ongoing challenges of the marketplace. I thrive when I’m figuring out how to take an entrepreneur’s vision and turn that into a successful, profitable endeavor. This is what keeps me going and is the reason why I can’t wait for each day to begin.

Every entrepreneur needs a strong support system and network if they are to be successful. How invaluable has networking been for you?
Incredibly so. I have always had a natural curiosity about people, which has made me a natural networker. It’s not something I think about. I am genuinely fascinated by people —what makes them tick, where they came from and how they execute their ideas. After all, your greatest strength as an entrepreneur is the people you surround yourself with. I am passionate about creating enterprises where everyone wins — from the CEO's whose companies I help make successful, to their many employees, to my team that works with me, many of whom have been with me from the start.

Have you had any business failures? If so, how did you manage to come back stronger?
Of course I’ve had business failures, but I’ve learned from them and have gone on to do bigger and better deals. Failure isn’t a concept I subscribe to. When things don’t work it’s just a new opportunity in the making.

What are your three major achievements?
First of all, my two amazing children who are the light of my life. Second, creating BG Capital Group, which has provided a livelihood for scores of incredible people and their families. We currently have businesses in Healthcare, Financial Management, Recreation and Hospitality. And third, being able to give back. My charity and philanthropic endeavors have allowed me to come full circle. Being able to give back and help wherever I can has honestly been some of the most rewarding moments of my life.

What is your secret to success?
Stay curious, trust intuition, invest in people and, most importantly, have FUN!

Did you have to give up anything in exchange for success?
No, never. True success means creating the perfect win-win for all concerned.

If someone wanted to follow in your footsteps, what are your recommendations? What are five things that being an entrepreneur has taught you about life?
Do what my mother always encouraged and nurtured: follow your passion, hone your skills, surround yourself with the right talent and resources, and don’t quit until your vision is realized. As far as five things that have taught me about life? Be true to yourself, trust your intuition, love what you do, enjoy the people in your life, NEVER GIVE UP.

Has COVID-19 affected your businesses?
Yes, of course. But, remember, right around the corner from adversity lies opportunity. These huge challenges create the tremendous opportunities that successful entrepreneurs thrive on. Within our BG family of companies we have been working hard to support our team members by diversifying positions to preserve as many jobs as possible. Although some projects in the BG pipeline have been slowed, we are poised to resume with full force once the all-clear is sounded. In the interim, we are using this time to uncover new opportunities and nurture creative strategies.

Is there something that you want to buy but haven't yet?
Buy? No. Create? Yes! I’m always excited about that next great idea or innovation.

Tell us about the inspiration behind BG Signature's flagship property, BG Ocala Ranch. How did that begin?
My passion for the ranch began the moment I visited the area over a decade ago. I love horses and nature and was thrilled to find both in such a beautiful, unspoiled location in the middle of Florida. The natural beauty of the area, which is home to some of the world’s most famous race horses, is breathtaking. It is also very reminiscent of growing up in northern Ontario, Canada where miles of open fields and pastures gave me a sense of autonomy and freedom without distraction. I wanted to bring those things together for my children to experience and to share with their friends and mine. After purchasing the sprawling property, I spent the next several years restoring it to the elegant equestrian retreat that it is today. Every time I drive through its magnificent front gates it makes me feel like I’m going back in time. It has grown to become a very special place to me — a place where I can often be found enjoying an afternoon of playing polo, horseback riding, mountain biking, playing pickle ball or splashing in the swimming pool with family and friends.

What is your favorite business book? What are you currently reading?
One Up On Wall Street, by Peter Lynch (which I’m currently re-reading) or anything by Warren Buffet.

If you could go anywhere, where would you go?
I’m hoping to join our family boat, BG Charade, in Malaysia to cruise the South Pacific this year.

To be successful, do you need to go to an Ivy League School?
No. You need passion for what you are doing and an unwavering determination to succeed.

What is the craziest thing you've ever done?
Thinking that I could become a professional polo player — not that I didn’t try. Although I won many major tournaments and enjoyed much success, I never achieved the professional level I had hoped for.

What’s better? Living on land or on the boat?
The boat, of course.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Miami?
Casa Tua.

If you could invite five famous people from different times for dinner, who would you invite and why?
I would invite my entire family tree so that I could understand who we are and where we came from.

What are you looking forward to in the near future?
Watching my children’s lives unfold, seeing what they are drawn to, and watching them fulfill their passions and talents.

What defines you?
Someone who is rich in spirit, rich in the love of family and friends, and a true lover of life.

In his late 30's, Genovese brought his winning touch from the boardroom into the polo field by building one of North America's top-ranked teams: Vancouver International Polo. In their first year, they competed in Royal Palm Polo's 14-goal Hartman League, which they won with a perfect 4-0 record. It was an unprecedented feat in the club's 25-year history. Two years later, they earned a place in history as Vancouver’s first team in more than two decades to clinch the prestigious Canadian Open, followed by taking top honors at the Toronto Invitational for three consecutive years.

Genovese’s love of boats began in his childhood, when every summer his family visited Muskoka’s iconic lakefront cottage country. Today, the district is known as the ‘Hamptons of the North’ and is home to generations of summer residents including Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Cindy Crawford and Harry Hamlin. “I was in kid-heaven and utterly captivated by the elegant yet powerful wooden speedboats passing by,” recalls Genovese. “The pride and care that went into these prized icons of Muskoka’s maritime history was made famous by Greavette Boats Limited, a name synonymous with Muskoka boat building led by visionary founder, Tom Greavette.” This fascination and appreciation grew over time and inspired Genovese to acquire and restore several of Muskoka’s most famous race boats and to launch the BG Vintage Racing Team. Genovese also owns the iconic Rambler, a 73-foot, 1903 Polson Iron Works Yacht, Pistoff, the 970-horsepower Vic Carpenter custom runabout that had been commissioned by Doug Bassett, Miss Miami, Miss Canada III, and Miss Canada IV, which was built for Muskoka racing team legends, Harold and Lorna Wilson, who captured international attention during the 1930's as the fastest boat on water — achieving speeds of over 200 mph. Genovese oversaw an arduous 23-month restoration of the legendary boat, including the installation of a 3000 horsepower Rolls-Royce Griffon engine. Genovese’s love of boats also led him to acquire and restore BG Charade, a classic 154-foot Feadship. The fully customized motor yacht, once owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, boasts a modern, stylish interior with six spacious staterooms accommodating 12 guests and 12 crew for overnight trips. Guests enjoy the full range of water toys that bring out the kid in everyone — from the massive starboard-mounted climbing wall and water slide to a fleet of wave runners, sea bobs, paddle boards, kayaks and more.

Bobby Genovese dedicates his time, energy and substantial resources to numerous philanthropic endeavors, especially those that serve children. He is a longtime supporter of the Vancouver-based Face the World Foundation. In its 30-year history it has raised more than $19 million to assist more than 400 organizations devoted to everything from securing access to shelters and hot meals to contributing to anti-bullying campaigns and supporting music and sports programs for children in need.Genovese is equally devoted to the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) — Canada’s largest and most sophisticated center for pediatric cancer research, treatment and care. His chairmanship of the annual Car and Boat Rally Scavenger Cups, which began in 2007, helped raise more than $20 million. “Our efforts will help the spectrum of what’s needed — from groundbreaking research and treatment to practical advancements like ‘chemotherapy backpacks’ that free young patients from confining hospital stays,” said Genovese.“Giving to others is something that I have done throughout my life. It is both a responsibility and a privilege.”

Насколько важен для вас нетворкинг?
Я всегда испытывал интерес к людям из разных отраслей, что сделало меня естественным «сетевиком». Но это не то, о чем я думаю. Я искренне восхищаюсь людьми, тем, что они создают, как развивают свое видение и реализуют идеи, работая с теми, кто разделяет их цель. Конечно, у меня были неудачи в бизнесе. Но я учился на них и продолжал заключать более крупные и выгодные сделки. Неудача — это не та концепция, которую я поддерживаю. Когда что-то не работает, это стоит воспринимать как новую возможность для развития и поиска других вариантов.

Нет, никогда. Истинный успех означает создание идеального беспроигрышного варианта для всех заинтересованных сторон. Если бы кто-то захотел пойти по вашим стопам, какие рекомендации вы бы ему дали? Сформулируйте пять отправных точек, которым вас научило предпринимательство и которые применимы в жизни. Следуйте своей страсти, любите то, что делаете, и доверяйте интуиции, оттачивайте навыки и будьте верны себе, окружайте себя талантливыми людьми и разнообразными ресурсами, не сдавайтесь и не бросайте дело, пока ваша идея не будет реализована. Моя мама всегда поощряла и лелеяла все это.

Повлиял ли COVID-19 на ваш бизнес?
Да, конечно. Но каждое несчастье таит в себе огромные возможности и вызов. Эти большие проблемы создают возможности, используя которые, процветают успешные предприниматели. В нашей группе компаний BG мы прилагаем все усилия, чтобы поддержать членов команды, диверсифицируя позиции, чтобы сохранить как можно больше рабочих мест. Моя страсть к ранчо BG Ocala началась с того момента, как я посетил этот район десять лет назад. Я люблю лошадей и природу и был очень рад найти и то и другое в таком красивом, нетронутом месте в центре Флориды. От природных красот этого района, где обитают одни из самых известных в мире скаковых лошадей, захватывает дух. Это также напоминает мне о детстве в Северном Онтарио. Мили открытых полей и пастбищ давали мне ощущение свободы и возможность мечтать, не отвлекаясь. Я хотел собрать все это вместе, чтобы мои дети могли испытать и поделиться этим со своими друзьями и со мной. Купив 100-акровый участок, я следующие несколько лет потратил на то, чтобы превратить его в элегантное место для конного спорта, каким оно является сегодня. «Один на Уолл-Стрит», автор Питер Линч. Сейчас я ее перечитываю. И что угодно от Уоррена Баффета.

Если бы вы могли пойти куда угодно, куда бы вы пошли?
Я надеюсь попасть на нашу семейную яхту в Малайзии, чтобы путешествовать по южной части Тихого океана в этом году.
